It took quite some persuading to get Fry to come into the swimming pool, knowing the new health and safety rule that he would have to wear a swim hat if he wanted to get in the pool.
"What are you going to do?" Coral asks, putting her own swim hat on.
"I don't know." Fry admits.
He doesn't put the hat on though, changing into his swim trunks as usual and going to the pool with the others. As he gets there, the lifeguard shakes his head.
"Nobody in the pool without a hat."
Fry sits on the floor below the lifeguard stool. Not going in the pool then. But after a moment Mr Irons steps up to the lifeguard and speaks in a quiet but firm tone.
"Excuse me, do you know what a sensory processing issue is?"
The lifeguard blinks, then shakes his head. Mr Irons continues.
"It's why Alexander won't be wearing a hat, and why he will be going in the pool. If your manager has a problem with that she is welcome to address it in writing with our special needs co-ordinator."
"Who's that?" The lifeguard asks.
Mr Irons smiles. "Me." He turns back to the class. "Right, everyone in the pool please."
"If Fry doesn't have to wear a hat, why do I have to wear a hat?" Bethany asks.
"Because he has a medical reason." Mr Irons says. "Just like if you are milk intolerant you don't have to drink milk, or if you have a sprained ankle you don't have to wear school shoes." He thinks for a moment. "Sometimes giving everyone an equal chance means you have to let them do something differently."
Bethany looks like she might object, but then realises this might result in her having to drink milk and shuts up.
Fry glances up at his teacher, who gives him a little nod and a smile. He smiles a little back in thanks, and gets into the pool.
