"You must remain in silence until we tell you that you may speak. If you need assistance, raise your hand and an invigilator will come to you. You can whisper to them quietly."

In the big hall, the rows of desks have been set out for a while. Pretty much every kid in the school has a different curriculum when it comes to exams. At the front, two of the eighteen-year-olds from the LD class are sitting, pleased to have finally got here. Just behind them are the fifteen and sixteen year olds in the regular class.

"You can ask what does this say, if the printing is not very good. You cannot ask what something means."

Fry, Maurice and Jo are at the back. It was decided that this would be least distracting to the kids who were taking the exam at the normal time or later. Nothing like watching a twelve year old take your exam to lower your self esteem.

"You must not communicate with the other candidates or distract them in any way."

Fry sees Jo rearranging her pencils in order of size. Big to small, small to big. He wonders if this constitutes cheating by distracting him, but decides not to say.

"If you need the toilet or feel unwell, put up your hand and tell the invigilator. You must not leave your seat without permission."

This could be a truly humiliating day. What if all the past papers were different? What if he can't answer any of the questions? Then he'd look like a right fool for pushing everyone to let him take it early and moving schools and...

"You have one hour and thirty minutes. You may now start the exam."

Fry opens his test paper and looks at the questions. Deep breath, check how many pages there are. And then... he loses himself in the maths, just gets on with it, and before he knows it all the questions are done and double checked.

He looks up at the time. There's still forty minutes left. He checks his answers again.

Maybe half the paper is missing. Or half the questions. Or some of them are stuck together. Or it's the wrong paper...

He puts his hand up. Mrs Carter smiles and comes over to him.

"I think some of my paper is missing." Fry whispers anxiously. Mrs Carter looks through and counts all the pager.

"No, don't worry, it's all there. If you're done just check your answers and then sit quietly okay?"

So he sits and waits, and waits, and waits, and tries calculating the number of wooden blocks that make up the floor of the hall.
