Jul. 27th, 2014 10:00 pmIt hadn't been too bad, going to Grandpa and Maggie's each day for the week. Fry definitely felt it was better from the kids club he wasn't allowed to go back to anyway.
Callum and Ethan, his... step-uncle-whatevers... don't have anything much in common with him, other than video games, which means he's been getting in plenty of television and gaming time. Mum doesn't seem terribly keen on this, which might be something to do with him not being tired and waking up at four in the morning. Apparently his decision to get up and rearrange all his books into Dewey Decimal System order like he learned in the library woke everyone up.
And then came the bombshell.
"What do you mean they have to come here?" Fry asks for the fourth time.
"You've been to Maggie's house all week, now the kids have to come here, it's polite." Mum explains.
Fry watches her cleaning the living room. He has a bad feeling about Callum and Ethan and Madison running around their house.
Fortunately, Coral commandeers Madison the minute the kids arrive. Callum and Ethan immediately start exploring the house, with Fry unsure which of them to follow.
"Oh cool, there's an attic!" Callum, the younger boy, runs up the stairs towards Fry's room.
"Not in my room!" Fry charges after him, but Callum has already barged in.
"Shit, Ethan, come check this out!" Callum yells, staring around Fry's room. "What's this?"
"Get out of my room!" Fry wails, as Callum picks up the bottom of a pile of books, spilling the rest on the floor. The top one get a dog-eared corner as it lands on its side.
"A thousand and one practice times tables." Ethan reads off the book as Callum opens it. "Aaaand he's done all of them."
"Look at this." Callum drops the book and picks up a piece of paper on Fry's desk. "It's like a map... of our house. What's all these numbers?"
"If the carpet in the living room stretches all the way to the wall you have eight hundred and forty dots in your living room." Fry blurts out. "Now get out, stop touching my things!"
Callum and Ethan stare at him. Then Ethan takes pity on him and puts the books back on the desk. Fry starts arranging them so that they're in exactly the right place.
"C'mon Callum, he's getting his knickers in a twist." Ethan says, turning to go back downstairs. Callum meanwhile starts playing with Fry's hole-punch.
"Hey, what's that?" Callum asks, dropping the hole-punch and spilling 'holes' all over the floor. He approaches the only visible toy in the room, a black ball on a stand.
"Don't touch that. It's a planetarium." Fry says.
"What's that?" Ethan asks, wandering back over.
"It shows the stars. You can't turn it on, it's not nine o'clock." Fry says.
"So what? I wanna see!" Callum starts looking for the switch.
"He said no, leave him alone." Ethan says, grabbing for the ball.
They struggle for a moment until the ball slips out of Callum's hands, falls on the floor, and breaks.
