Jun. 23rd, 2016 11:03 pmThe detective agency drew a bit of a blank over the next few days. The 'pranks' on Mr Irons continued only one more day, with a massive glitter explosion in the classroom, before they stopped as quickly as they had begun.
The glitter explosion had been very unnerving for Fry, who hated to see lots of 'bits' everywhere, and had had to spend the rest of the day working in the resources room. Even by the end of the week, they were still finding bits. At this point, Mrs Patel had stood up in assembly and said that nobody was permitted in Classroom 3 during break or lunch without permission.
The pranks seemed to stop. Fry couldn't help but wish they could have carried on long enough to find the perpetrator. But he and Xiao and Teddy continued to try and think how they could catch them.
"We could leave a trap." Xiao says. "Like a precarious pot of glue on the desk on some books except that we cover the outside of the pot with henna and then they touch it to knock it over the desk and get caught red-handed."
"Yeah, but what if we touch it?" Fry asks. "Then it'll look like we did it."
"What are you doing?" Kasha asks, coming over.
"Plotting." Fry says. "What are you doing?"
"Hiding from my old gang." Kasha says. "Amy didn't come in today, and then Lucy admitted she's the other one who's leaving, so George and Krishna have gone off in a moody. I'm not in the group any more but I was fed up of hearing them whine about who to recruit into their group."
Fry excuses himself for a moment, having had a thought, and goes over to George and Krishna. What about the new kid, whose parents invited the entire class to a party to try and help her make new friends?
"Are you looking for new friends?" he asks. "Maybe you could help Pixie?"
George glares at him. "No way."
"Why not?" Fry asks.
"If I invited the whole class to my council house, and my Dad made them cheese sandwiches, and I sat in the corner too fat for my dress and didn't speak to anyone, do you think they'd all rush to be my friend?" George asks, in a dangerous tone missed by Fry.
Fry considers the question. "What kind of cheese?"
"No, they wouldn't want to be my friends." George says, ignoring his question. "You can't buy friends, Fry. I hate girls like her who think they can."
Fry decides to give up on this, and looks at his watch to see what time it is, presses the button to make it glow with the time, and...
Light bulb
He abruptly leaves and goes back to his group.
"Xiao! Is there a flickering light in your classroom?"
"Yes." Xiao says. "Why?"
"When did it break?"
"Last Thursday morning." Xiao says.
"Tell me this." Fry says. "Why would Mr Morton change our class's light bulb at Thursday lunch time, but not change his own class's? We don't even have our lights on at lunch break, because we turn them off, it's class rules, so how would he know it was broken?"
"Simple." Xiao says, catching on. "It wasn't. Mr Morton was replacing a working bulb with a flickering one. And when he got caught, he put it back in our classroom."
"And he would only do that if he's the prankster?" Teddy asks. "But why would he want to upset Mr Irons?"
"He knows Mr Irons from the past." Fry says. He hasn't told the others that Mr Morton let slip that Mr Irons was autistic. He wants to talk to him about it first, but doesn't know how to bring it up.
"So it could be a grudge." Teddy says. "But how are we going to nail a teacher?"
Fry looks back at his watch.
"I've got a plan."
