Coral hesitated at the end of registration, waited until the others had left for assembly, then went up to Mr Warren's desk.
"Mr Warren?"
"Yes Coral?" Mr Warren smiles at her.
"Please may I have tomorrow off? My brother's going to be in court as a witness in his friend's abuse case."
"I'm sorry to hear that." Mr Warren says. "But why do you need to be there?"
"He's scared about testifying." Coral says. "I mean, Mum and Dad and Max are going with him, but..."
She looks around, hearing the door creak. One of the other girls in her class had come back for her hymn book. She grabs it and goes again.
"Coral, are you a carer for your brother?" Mr Warren asks.
"I... I guess that depends how you define carer." Coral says. "Mum and Dad do most of the looking after him, I just like to look out for him."
"You can't miss school to look after him, sorry." Mr Warren says. "I'm sure he'll be fine with all those others there to support him, and I'm sure he'll want you to be here at school."
Coral accepts this and goes off to assembly. She's a bit worried now that Mr Warren will bring this up at parents' evening tonight.
At morning break, she's in the girls' bathroom, when she hears voices outside the cubicle.
"You are not going to believe what I heard earlier. You know Coral's brother, the retarded kid that hangs outside school? He's only up in court!" The girl who went back for her hymn book is saying.
"Wow." Another girl says.
Coral internally groans, flushes the toilet and goes out. The two girls go red when they see her.
"Firstly, my brother is not 'retarded'. He's got an IQ of 162. Secondly, he's in court as a witness, not as the accused. Please don't gossip about it."
"Sorry Coral." the first girl says, wincing. "I didn't really mean the retarded bit. I couldn't remember what it was called."
"His name is Fry." Coral says. "And it's called Asperger Syndrome, and it doesn't define who he is."
"Mr Warren?"
