It's just after lunch, and in Brooke, Gil and Remy's class there's an art lesson going on. Well, specifically, everyone has been asked to do a picture of a historical king or queen. There are some books around to help with it.

Brooke has decided to do Charles the First, while her friend Alisha does Henry the Eighth. Gil, having not yet been spotted by Miss Bates, is drawing Elvis.

Remy, for her part, is snickering softly at Gill's drawing whilst she tries to decide on her own. Currently, she's undecided between Cleoparta, and Queen Elizabeth.

Mrs Bates is coming around the classroom. She stops next to Remy and crouches next to her, smiling.

"Do you need any help Remy? I realise history lessons here must be a little bit different from America."

Gil grins at her, and gets a piece of black wool to put on his hair.

"Just a little," she says, agreeing with the statement. "I can't decide if I wanna make Queen Elizabeth, or Cleopatra. She was like a queen, right?"

"Oh yes, she was. I think we have a book with a picture of her in one of these books." Mrs Bates says, getting up and picking another book off the shelf.

"Gilbert, is that James the first? Why is he wearing sunglasses?" she adds on her way back.

"It's Elvis. He's the king of rock and roll." Gil says. "And this is a cheeseburger."

"Very nice, but that's not for this project. Please save it for later and do one with an actual monarch."

Remy flashes Gill another grins as Mrs. Bates' attention is away from her. She thought it was clever, after all.

Book retrieved, she looks through it carefully.

Mrs Bates, realising that she probably needs to attend to the most troublesome Sandhu in the room, goes to see what Brooke is up to.

"Brooklyn, an execution scene is not appropriate for a classroom!"

"But Charles the first did have his head cut off. And this is the blood spurting out." Brooke protests.

"You can't do that, if you take it home Fry'll go all squeamish." Gil points out.

"And it won't look good for parents evening." Mrs Bates says. "Oh for goodness' sake Alisha, what on Earth is Henry the eighth doing there?"

"It's when he exploded in his coffin." Alisha says, with an innocent expression. "I read it in a Horrible History book."

A couple of girls, who have an appearance suspicious of a bit of make-up, start to whisper and snigger while looking at Brooke and Alisha. Mrs Bates lectures them on how they're in year 5 now and need to show a little better behaviour.

Having twisted in her seat to view Brooke and her friend's artwork, and as a result, catches sight of the tittering girls. Feeling a little protective of her newly found family, she shoots them a warning Look before righting herself again.

The girls scowl at Remy after the look, then whisper again.

Brooke catches the girls scowling at her new sisterling; she and Alisha give them 'L' signs when Mrs Bates' back is turned.

"Mrs Bates, Brooklyn swore at us." one of the girls says.

"Liar!" Brooke retorts promptly.

"Enough, both of you." Mrs Bates says. She doesn't need to shout; they both subside. She hands out fresh bits of paper to Brooke, Alisha and Gil.

"Let's hope you'll be a good influence on your new siblings." she says quietly to Remy, smiling gently.

She offers her teacher a small smile, pausing in her reconstruction of Cleopatra.

"I'll try," she says softy.

"Can you pass the sparkles please?" Gil asks, a few moments later.

He's given up on his picture of Elvis, as instructed, and is now doing Simba.

"Sure."

It takes her a moment, as she finishes drawing out an eye, then passes over the bottle in question.

"That looks good," she comments as she looks over.

"Thanks. Simba totally counts as a king, she didn't say it had to be a real one." Gil says.

It's soon time to pack up for break, and Mrs Bates has time to despair again at Gil's picture. Brooke and Alicia get slightly better reviews of their monarch pictures, as the teacher fails to notice the subtle additional piercings and tattoos they've been given with 'accidentally' dropped glitter blobs.

As they head out for break, the two sniggering girls sidle up to Remy. She may have picked up their names as Claudia and Louise.

"So, Remy, what's it like living in the weirdo house?" Claudia asks.

"Definitely," Remy says, agreeing with her adoptive brother. Soon, she finishes up her own project and she helps Gil clean up their station before trailing outside for break behind the rest of the kids. She's just about to make a beeline for Brook when the two girls catch up to her and she's ready to give them the benefit of the doubt regarding their actions in class...until they start talking. Immediately, it makes her tense and proverbial hackles rise.

"Don't call them weirdos," she warns.

"I went there once, it's like full of rules." Louise says.

"Do you remember when their older brother was here and every time anyone touched him he would like freak out?" Claudia adds, giggling. "Brooklyn was totally embarrassed of him, and her nerdy older sister. She used to be kinda cool, but now she totally tries too hard and it's just weird."

Over on the other side of the playground, the playground moniter is asking Brooke to stop practicing martial arts with Alicia, as it's against health and safety regulations.

Taking a deep breath to calm herself, she curls her hands into fists at her sides. She's had to look out for herself for a while now, so it's not quite on her mind to get adult assistance.

"The rules help with so many of us there," she says firstly. "And of course Fry doesn't like being touched, he's a-...autistic."

"Oi!" A couple of dark-haired twin boys from year 6, the year above, pause while passing and stand either side of Remy.

"We have an autistic brother too." one of the twins says.

"And he's pretty weird. But only we get to say it, because he's our brother." the other says.

"So leave the new kid alone." the first twin says.

"They giving you trouble Remy?" Brooke asks, coming to her rescue.

The cavalry arriving makes her blink, but it's not unwelcome. She un-tenses some as the twins dress down the girls, and she offers Brooke a bit of a smile as she arrives.

"M'fine," she says mildly. Then to all three of them. "But thanks."

Louise and Claudia slope off, still whispering.

"We're Maurice's brothers." the first twin informs Remy.

"So we've known Fry for ages." the second twin says.

"Catch you later Remy." they say together.

"Claudia and Louise are mean sometimes." Brooke says, as the boys leave. "But they won't hurt you or anything. Wanna come see how far we can catapult a Barbie head?"

Remy watches the girls go before waving the boys off with a grin.

"Sure," she says to Brooke with that same grin. "Think we can get it over the swings?"
