Jan. 15th, 2014 10:53 pm"How many centimetres do I need to stay away from Martha?" Fry asks Mr Walker, for the fourth time that day.
He misses the slightly exasperated noise his teacher makes.
"Oh I don't know, thirty?" Mr Walker says. "Just try not to wind her up?"
"What part of her would I wind?" Fry asks, confused.
"It's an expression. It means... just leave her, okay?" Mr Walker says, as Martha starts crying across the room because one of her maths answers was wrong. "Thirty centimetres is a long ruler."
Fry takes his folding ruler out into the playground just to make sure. Every time he comes too close to Martha, he gets the ruler out and checks the distance.
"What are you doing?" Martha asks, eventually.
"I'm giving you space." Fry says.
"You're weird." Martha says, unsure.
"I don't want you to cry." Fry says. "I don't want you to be scared."
Martha blinks at him. Then scuffs her shoe on the floor.
"I'm not scared of you." she says. "I miss Daddy. Lots and lots, every day."
Then she starts to cry again. Fry gets his ruler out and measures his distance.
"What are you doing to her now?" Martha's big brother, Bobby, storms over. "I told you to leave her alone!"
He grabs Fry's bendy ruler and snaps it in half.
Fry stares at the ruler, then at Bobby, before a scuffle ensues.
