Oct. 11th, 2015 09:36 pmThere was some sort of drama going on in the class. Fry, who paid no attention to the social groups of the other children, didn't really notice, until he saw Amy coming out of the toilets with red eyes for the second time that week.
"Are you diseased?" he asks. To his surprise, she starts crying again and runs back into the toilet.
He goes to find Teddy to ask what's going on, but he's playing football with Jamal and Bradley, and Fry doesn't like going near footballs. Tommy is nearby, whacking a tennis ball against a wall, and Fry watches for a few minutes until Tommy misses it.
"Twenty four." he says, picking up the ball to hand back to Tommy.
"What?" Tommy asks, perplexed.
"You hit it twenty four times without missing." Fry says. "Last week you hit it sixteen, so you improved fifty per cent."
"Oh. Thanks." Tommy says, taking the ball. "I might make the county team soon, but don't tell anyone in case I don't make it."
"Oh, cool." Fry nods. "I won't tell."
Tommy goes back to hitting his ball, and Fry looks around to see if he can find Noah, who is usually not doing anything sporty. Sure enough, Noah is on a bench, reading a book, so Fry heads over to him.
"Why is Amy crying?" he asks, sitting next to him.
"Amy's crying?" Noah asks, looking up. "Where?"
"In the girls' toilet." Fry says. "So I can't go in and ask."
"I think it's because Kasha's group fell out." Noah says. "Because Amy went with George, and then Krishna said Kasha took her sparkly pink pen, and Lucy H took Krishna's side, and Kasha had a big argument with them, and now George is going round with Amy and Krishna and Lucy."
"How do you know that?" Fry asks.
"Everyone in our class knows that, they've been arguing all week." Noah says. He puts down his book. "Fry, I'm starting to think George is trouble."
"But she's a top student." Fry says.
Noah laughs. "Top students can be trouble." he looks more serious. "Remember how she told you to buy that book without asking? I think we should search her desk for the pen."
Fry nods in agreement. This is detective work, and it might help Kasha get her other friends back. He follows Noah around to the back door, and they slip back into the school. You aren't meant to go back to the classroom at break unless it's raining, but this is a special case.
Together, they start searching through the desk that sits between theirs. There's no sight of the pen. Noah is careful to put everything where he found it.
"Maybe she just lost the pen." he says. "It would have been good proof..." he stops, his eyes widening. "Fry, look at these!"
Fry looks back in the desk. Noah picks up George's maths text book, and opens it.
"Fry... these are teacher's editions." Noah says, looking slightly panicked. "She's got a teacher's edition of every book. They've got all the answers in!"
Fry stares in horror. He knows this is serious cheating; if they hand George in, she'll be in terrible trouble, and if they don't, they're accomplices.
Noah puts them back quickly and hurries Fry out the room before he can start getting upset and making a lot of noise.
"What do we do?" Fry asks, panicked.
"Calm down, it's okay, I'll think of something." Noah says. "I'll ask Dad, he's a vicar, he'll know what to do. Just try and be normal to George until we decide."
