It's the last day of the academic year.
At break time Lenny called the Britain's Got Talent line on his Mum's mobile. Making sure the number isn't one they can be traced on. The others hover around to see what he has to say.
"Okay, you have to be in London on the 20th, so make sure free." he says.
"Isn't that a new zPhonexTra?" Maurice asks. "My mums wouldn't let me near one of those."
"Mine neither." Lenny says. "That's why she doesn't know I have it."
The others look a bit uneasy at that. Lenny just shrugs. The bell goes for the final assembly so they head back inside.
It's a small school with very variable achievements, so pretty much everyone has a prize to collect. Lenny and James, who have been through this before, have been making bets on who is going to win some of the recurrent prizes.
"Lenny, are you sure you're going to win all those?" Fry asks, peering down his list.
"Yes, I'm smartest in the school." Lenny says.
"You're not going to have a moody if you win less than this are you?" Jo asks.
"No. I shall just assume the judges were wrong." Lenny says. "Plus the rest of you should be given a chance out of pity."
The others roll their eyes and ignore him.
Lenny makes a grumbly comment when the awards of Best Rapper and Most Library Books Borrowed go to Ollie of the Junior LD class. Apparently they were on his list.
Fry finds himself in receipt of a Perfect Attendance Award, and a Music Composition Prize. It makes a nice change from the three Fluffiest Hair certificates he has on his wall at home.
When it's Lenny's turn, he does indeed scoop quite a few. But just as he's supposed to go up to get them, his Mum's phone bleeps. He gets it out of his pocket to turn it off, but accidentally opens the video message.
The sound effects from the video go loudly into the quiet assembly room. Fry glances across in surprise and sees the sexual video above the message of 'Have you told him yet? Meet me in the shed to recreate what you're missing.'
"Lenny, turn it off." he hisses. Lenny just stares in shock.
Mrs Carter moves over.
"Leonard! What are you doing?" she asks, aghast.
Lenny drops the phone and runs out of the hall.
"It's his mum's phone." Fry says. "I don't think she knew he has it."
Mrs Carter picks up the phone and takes it to the headmaster. He has a look, and turns it off. He sends Mrs Carter after Lenny, then continues the ceremony.
"How embarrassing." Jo says afterwards, as they spill into the playground clutching their various mini trophies.
'That's not his Dad.' James writes on his board.
"You've met Lenny's parents?" Fry asks. Lenny never has people over, and he boards most of the week. But James nods.
"Do you know where he lives?" Fry asks.
He gets the address off James, then asks Jo to take him home. Despite her prostestations, he then races down the ten minute walk to Lenny's.
He stops outside, catching his breath, and ducks behind a wall. He can hear a lot of shouting, and some loud crashes, coming from the back. The message said something about a shed... he climbs over the wall and crawls under the level of the windows until he can get a better view. Ah, more like a hut than a shed.
He wonders whether he should call the police. He sends a quick text to his parents to say he's at Lenny's, then sits watching.
After a few minutes the two come out of the shed. Lenny is in a fight with the man who isn't his dad. Fry keeps hiding behind the shrub, worried about the fact that they're coming closer, and that they're both exchanging blows.
He can't make an escape without being seen. He has to do something.
As Lenny's attacker picks up a stick, Fry uses the element of surprise, jumps out behind him, and grabs it off him. He brings the man's arm down in an armlock, twists hard, and forces him to his knees. To his alarm, Lenny hits him again.
"Lenny, stop it!" he yells.
"He's going to take my mum away!" Lenny yells.
"Yeah, and if you keep hitting him you're going to end up in court." Fry yells back, as the man struggles.
"Let me go, he attacked me! I'm the victim here!"
"What the hell is going on?" Another man that looks like an older Lenny rounds the corner. This clearly is his dad. Fry lets go of Lenny's mother's lover.
"Get out of here kid." Lenny says to Fry, quietly. "Thanks, but you shouldn't be here."
"I love your wife." the Lover says, standing up. "And she shouldn't have to live with you or this monster of a teenager."
"Go, you're gonna get hurt." Lenny urges.
"Come with me." Fry urges back.
"You've ruined my marriage!" Lenny's father yells at Lenny. "We had it great until you came along."
Fry makes a run for it, dives back over the wall, and calls the police. There's no time to wait for them to get there though, because Lenny soon comes running out and jumps over the wall, almost landing on top of him.
"Lenny!"
Lenny groans when he sees Fry is still there, grabs him by the arm and hauls him up to sprint with him down the road. He pulls Fry into an old burnt out garage on the corner, where they hide behind a large sheet of burnt wood.
"Not a word, kid." he whispers. They keep still and listen intently. Someone does look in for them, but doesn't find them.
"Did you call the police?" Lenny asks, after a few long moments.
"Yeah. I thought you were going to get killed. Should I not have?"
Lenny shrugs.
"Mrs Carter's car was coming up the road. One of the others must have tipped her off what you were doing." he says. "No chance of the police not getting involved."
He looks deflated.
"I'm not pressing charges though. He'd only say I hit him first, which is true. My parents are going to split up and I won't be able to go to Jackson Street any more. I'll end up back in mainstream getting beaten up all the time."
"Sorry." Fry says, lacking anything better to say. "I'll tell them you were provoked."
He rubs his hand. There's a friction burn from the stick.
"I don't want you involved." Lenny says. "Thanks for coming and backing me up, but please, just do me one favour?"
"What?"
"Ask Mrs Carter to bring my trophies."
"Sure." Fry watches Lenny as he gets up. He looks battered and sore, the way he's moving. "Um, are you going to be okay?"
"I'll be fine. Go home." Lenny walks out of the garage, heading for home.
