Aug. 22nd, 2016 09:26 pmIt's just over a week until they go back to school. And Fry has got through twenty-nine of the extra credit assignments he picked up from Miss Havisham's classroom. At one or two a day, it hasn't been very arduous, and certainly hasn't taken enough of his time up for Mum to start fretting that he's working too hard.
He just has one problem now. He's stuck.
In desperation, he rings up Xiao and invites her over. She seems keen, and because he knows she's tidy, he even invites her up to his room, a privilege he doesn't extend to all that many people.
"Okay, let's get started." He says, placing the pile of extra credit on the desk. "Which one shall we work on?"
Xiao's smile fades.
"You invited me over here to do extra credit?" she asks. "I mean, I know I was doing them too, and I'm glad you told me about it, but... I thought we were going to hang out."
Fry frowns slightly.
"Hang out? What for?"
Xiao opens her mouth, then shuts it again. And then looks at the pile of extra credit.
"You didn't call me because you wanted to see me. You called me because you were stuck."
"Yes." Fry says. Why are her eyes all runny like that? It better not be a cold. But then, Xiao blows her nose and smiles.
"Okay, study buddy." she says quietly. "Where are you stuck?"
She helps him with one of the grammar sheets. He helps her with one of the science ones, showing her his experiment results so that she can do some of the questions. They agree between them that a couple of the pieces are impossible without more context - Miss Havisham had said, after all, that some of them wouldn't be possible until they had done other work.
"Well, even if you just wanted to pick my brains, I had fun." Xiao says, at the end.
"Me too." Fry says. Then he remembers something, and gets a recordable CD out of his desk and hands it to her. "I made this for you."
"Oh, you did?" Xiao takes the CD. "What is it?"
"It's a copy of the video my Mum made of the Perseid meteor shower, we saw it while we were camping and she recorded it with her special camera telescope." Fry says. "It's four hours twenty eight minutes long but I bookmarked all the minutes where the meteors were on the back."
Xiao takes it, and then smiles properly.
"Thanks Fry. I actually got something for you too."
She reaches into her bag and pulls out a little book. She hands it to Fry.
"'The Raven'." Fry reads off the cover. "'Edgar Allan Poe'
"I just thought you might like it for some reason, I'm not sure why." Xiao shrugs. "Anyway, you were the only person who called me this summer, so thanks for having me."
Fry waves her off, takes the book upstairs, and begins to read.
