Apr. 6th, 2011 12:06 am"Mrs Carter, I don't need to learn how to shop." Fry complains, as they get out of the school mini bus.
"Who does?" Marcus whispers to Fry. "But if you keep quiet, we won't have to do Geography."
"Fair point." Fry agrees.
"Those of you who are good at shopping can see it as a treat and help those who aren't so sure about it." Mrs Carter says. "Fry, I'd like you to pair up with James, Candy and Nimesh stay together, Maurice with the twins."
"Why do we have to have Maurice?" Marcus asks, moodily.
"I can go on my own." Maurice says.
"Nobody's going on their own." Mrs Carter says firmly. "Nobody gets excluded in this class."
"You must be nobody then." Marcus whispers meanly to Maurice, and the twins try to ditch him as soon as they get into the store.
"All right, everyone remember to follow your shopping lists and stay on budget!" Mrs Carter calls as everyone disperses. "Make sure you get everything for home economics this afternoon!"
Fry sets off with James down the fruit aisle. He's inclined to let James do this himself, believing that he's more than capable, but keeps an eye out. He picks out most of the things he needs and puts them in the basket. He looks back at James, who has dumped his basket and is playing with a sample game console he found.
"Oi! James!" Fry rolls his eyes and goes over. "We're being timed you know."
James waves a hand.
"Aye, but Mrs Carter said we were doing this realistically." he says.
"Yeah... I don't think that's quite what she meant." Fry says. "What's on your list?"
James gets off the game and shows him the list.
"I can do it, I'm not a baby." he grumbles, going to pick up things and dump them in the basket.
"Of course you're not." Fry says, not liking to point out that several bits of fruit James has picked are either unripe or mouldy. They head into another aisle and find Maurice, alone, looking uncomfortable.
"One of the twins is pulling pranks." he hisses at Fry and James. "He's primed a tower of cans to fall over at any moment."
"Oh for... Maurice, try and contain the prank, James, stay with Maurice, I'll find the twins." Fry says.
He finds the twins lurking around a corner, waiting for their prank to play out.
"Fry, come check this out." Marcus whispers. "We ran a thread across the bottom of that aisle, which will pull out the bottom can, which will cause a suitable avalanche."
"That's not funny, what if that falls on a kid?" Fry says. "Or some little old person who falls and breaks their hip? Practical jokes shouldn't be dangerous."
"Piss off then." Marcus says.
"If you don't call it off, I'm gonna have to tell on you. I'd rather not." Fry says. "But the protocol of protecting one's classmates is invalidated in the face of danger."
"Go ahead, you can't prove anything - she's over there." Jamie says, pointing.
Fry heads towards Mrs Carter, trips over the thread, falls over, and gets hit with a huge pile of cans. Mrs Carter runs over to him.
"Fry, are you okay? How did that happen?" she asks. Her face darkens when he tells her, and she marches over to the twins.
"You are so dead Fry." Marcus hisses when they head out of the shop. "I can't believe you made me get an 'F' for shopping."
"Well you shouldn't have been so stupid." Fry says.
"There's two of us..."
"And one of you..."
"So don't mess with us." the twins say.
"Look, guys... the pranks were funny at first, but you're taking this too far." Fry says.
"Yeah." Candy agrees, coming up behind them. "I thought that thing where you changed all Mrs Carter's board markers for ones that disappeared shortly after she wrote with them was hillarious. But dropping heavy stuff on people isn't cool..." she stops, and frowns, then licks her finger and wipes it over the freckle next to Jamie's nose.
The freckle smudges.
"Get off, you freak!" Jamie yells, and the twins push past Fry and Candy to get on the minibus.
Fry and Candy share a look of astonishment.
"How did you know the freckle was fake?" Fry asks.
"It changed shade." Candy says. "I think it's mascara. Wait until the others hear!"
"I don't think we should tell the others." Fry says. "There must be a reason why they're doing it."
"You're right. Let's hold it over them instead so they can't pick on us." Candy says.
"I wasn't suggesting we blackmail them. I thought I'd talk to them."
"Who does?" Marcus whispers to Fry. "But if you keep quiet, we won't have to do Geography."
